iPhone and photographic film
Nowadays everybody knows how to capture images with an iPhone. Actually, most people think that the only way to take pictures is with your smartphone. Did you know that photography was invented years before the rise of the iPhone? How did people take photos in the early days of photography? My answer is this: by using film cameras. Film… as in the cinema cameras used in old cinematography.
Did this incite your curiosity? Are you interested in shooting with film? Then you should join this course.
Black and white film photography: you will discover how and with which camera the first photograph in history was captured and learn how to use the dials, levers and buttons on your father’s long-forgotten film camera… in black and white! You will become familiar with turning a colored world into a magic, inspiring, personal, original black and white picture. You will practice your new-found knowledge by going on a photo walk through the streets of the historic centre of Florence, a city that offers endless photo opportunities.
The best is yet to come: once you have unloaded the exposed film from your camera you will be introduced to the magical world of the darkroom, where you will learn how to develop black-and-white film.
The magical world of the darkroom
Surrounded by jars, liquids, trays and thermometers, you will develop your own negatives. This stage is magical, but what follows is even more exciting: you will learn the art of darkroom printing and see your photographs slowly appear in the developing tray!
From your contact sheets – thumbnail-sized positive images of your negative strips – you will choose your best photo, print it with an enlarger and later – why not? – frame it and display it in your home. This is the magic behind the darkroom and film photography; it is an exciting journey, definitely different than Hipstamatic!
Aims and objectives
This is classic photography in a one-month 80-hours intensive course for your summer in Florence. You will learn how to shoot with your grandfather’s old-fashioned film camera, the one forgotten in a box or a drawer somewhere in your attic (the older the camera, the better). You will learn basic photography technique which is the same as for digital photography, to handle films and sensitized photo paper in the field and in the darkroom, to take pictures without the use of a light meter device. You will also learn how different lenses work and discover the chamber of wonders: the darkroom.
This course fit your needs. This program is customizable. If your entry level is advanced, you can ask to customize your program on your needs.
