Materials for the Courses

‘What am I expected to own or to buy for to attend courses of photography, video making, graphic design and web design at TheDarkroom Academy of Florence?’

This is a very important question that deserves its time to be answered. We accomplish to this goal during the academic courses, for to give you the best and complete answer possible.
For this reason we are requiring not to have many gears with you prior to begin your courses.

If you are going to attend Short Private courses you may need to show up with the minimum equipment required – see ‘Prerequisites and requirements’ section under each ‘Description of the course’.

We strongly suggest not to buy new gears before the beginning of the course. It’s best to bring with you all materials and gears already owned.
You can receive plenty of information about computers, applications, cameras, lenses and the other equipments that best suit your needs.

‘I want to buy some gears anyways before to begin, at least for renewing old stuff, or for to be ready with Short Private courses. Any help?’

If you really like to buy some gears, please read our list below. You will find useful information about equipment and materials useful for studying in our school.

Computer

A certainty: if you need to buy a computer, buy a MacBook Pro 15″. There’s nothing to add about Macs & Apple. They are the  machines with the best operative system, their reliability helps you to solve many troubles, they can speed up your workflow in an impressive way. We are not talking about CPU speed but about the Apple environment in its totality. It’s indeed a pay-back expense for your future professional career.
No worries if you already own a Pc. You can attend the courses with it and you will have no limitations to study the whole program.
The size of the screen is biggest question of our lives. A 15″ monitor would best suite both clarity of vision and transportability.

Digital camera for photography and videography

Digital technology goes fast. We strongly recommend not to buy brand-new gears because they become obsolete in a year. Consider that at the end of your course, your camera would be loosing 50% of its original value and you would have an obsolete gear when your career is at the start. We suggest to buy a trusted second-hand equipment instead.
Find a list of service labs and photo stores that sell guaranteed second hand equipment in Florence and in Italy in the page ‘Useful Links’ included in this ‘Student Guide’ section.

Analog film camera

Normally students have at home all the rigs the school requires, but they don’t know because they look like “old grandma’s” stuff. Ask your parents or your friends. They surely have a camera that works for you. You need a manual camera. See ‘Find your analog camera’ page included in this ‘Student Guide’ section.

Old cameras that sit for years in a draw need servicing! We strongly recommend to service it before the beginning of the course or you may loose ground awaiting for it to be repaired during class progress!

If you need to buy a camera, you can bring the list with you and show it to the seller for to make clear what you are looking for. If you need a lens, better if you choose a prime lens and not a zoom one.

Tripod, flash unit, lenses, other gears…

Please wait for to get information about this question during the classes progress. Bring anyways all the stuff that you already own at home for the first day of school check up.
