For this month`s module of the academic course of photography at TheDarkroom we had Photojournalism, which was divided into Florence’s most important and special things, in an effort to show Firenze today. My project was Sports. The topic represented a challenge for me because I had to understand the importance of taking a picture fast and still capturing a great moment. Luckily athletes are so dedicated to their sports that it wasn`t as hard as I thought it would be to appreciate the real meaning of sport. I covered a marathon for Nike called Deejayten 2012. It started in Piazza Signoria and ended at Piazza Santa Croce. You could see people of all ages, from babies to old men, families, pets and even people on roller blades. In this particular sport you can capture moments with panning, portraits, location shots and more.
When I started the project I wanted to do a reportage of a particular event, where I could show every step of the journey. So I began with the pre marathon: people warming up, the beginning: people starting to run, the middle: getting closer to the final line and afterwards: when they got their medals and a “health bag” that had tissues, an apple and water. Celebrating a sport becomes a party, where everyone enjoys the happiness of conquering a personal or group goal.
This June you can enjoy this type of sports show also at Santa Croce where Calcio Storico takes place.
Another really important sport in Florence is rowing, that as much as any other sport, is a huge part in Florentine’s life. And it embellishes the city, making the Arno river a particular spectacle for the every day citizens. You can almost always
see them if you just walk close to the bridges.
Sport is very important for people`s health but also it brings them together. It doesn`t matter if you play football (soccer), basketball, rowing, running, swimming, etc, playing together or alone, it brings energy and happiness to our souls.
